産地：日本（梅自体は中国原産で日本には8世紀半ばに渡来） 落葉広葉樹
逸話
松竹梅と縁起物として数えられ、無病息災、厄除の縁起木です。また春先一番最初に花をつけることから『さい先が良い』とされており、進学や就職、結婚や開業といった節目に大変縁起が良いとされている。
県木や県花として、茨城、大阪、和歌山、静岡、大分が指定しています。
特徴
観賞や果実用に広く親しまれているが、木材としては流通していないため、ある意味で稀少木材といえる。
桜と同じ散孔材のため年輪は不明瞭だが桜に比べて褐色がかっている。材質的には桜より少し硬いくらいで加工性がよく、なにより加工中にいい香りがする。
経年変化が大きく、使い込む程に艶と深みがますため、3年程で落ち着いた赤褐色にかわる。
ただ粘りはそれほどないため、割れが入りやすく、取扱には注意が必要。
用途
観賞用、果実用として有名。
