銘木として名高く、良質な材の埋蔵量が少ない稀少木材です。
また、桑の葉は蚕が食べ長い絹糸がとれることから、縁起をかつぎ無病息災や延命長寿の木と言われています。
特徴
年輪は明瞭で硬く粘りがあり耐久性や保存性も高い。ただその強度故に切削加工は困難。
経年変化が非常に大きく、削りたての黄褐色の色は年月を経ると褐色の光沢のある重厚な雅味になる。
当店で販売している樹種の中でも最も経年変化が大きく、非常に面白いため、おすすめの材。
用途
床柱、床板、鏡台、簞笥等の高級和家具、また茶道具の材料としては最高級品にかぞえられる。
有名工芸作家が好んで使っていた材料でもある。
